Retrofit kit will turn diesel van into e-car

July 01, 2010 | Christoph Hammerschmidt | 222900926
A quick entry to electric mobility is the goal of a Stuttgart-based consortium of small and medium companies. The group plans to develop and market a retrofit kit which turns a diesel-powered van into an e-car.

Within the EleNa project, the consortium will develop such a retrofit kit for the Mercedes Sprinter van. The consortium which includes automotive suppliers Eberspächer, Huber Group, Aradex, Telemotive AG and research institute Fraunhofer IPA, hopes to have a prototype ready by Q1 / 2011.

The retrofit concept enables vendors and fleet operators to quickly and cost-efficiently switch to emission-free mobility, the group said in a press release. With this powertrain concept, the vehicles could be used in electrical drive mode during operations in urban and metro regions while for long-distance travels the conventional engine would be active.

The Huber Group will be responsible for the control units. The company plans to develop a control unit which will coordinate electric and combustion engine operation. Telemotive AG will provide the communications interface.

Fraunhofer IPA, specialized in production technology and automation, will support project management for EleNA. The Esslingen University of Applied Sciences will accompany the project with focus on prototype design and manufacturing. The EleNa project is part of the regional e-mobility plan which provides for 100.000 electric vehicles in the Stuttgart metropolitan region by the year 2020.
