72V BLDC driver has integrated voltage supply

The E523.50 from Elmos Semiconductor AG is a triple half-bridge driver IC for brushless DC (BLDC) motors. Designed for maximum operating voltages of 72V, the device is designed for automotive applications with 24V and 48V as well as industrial applications running off supply voltages between 24V and 60V. The E523.50 is qualified according to the automotive specification AEC-Q100 Grade 0 for temperatures up to 150°C.

The three half-bridge gate drivers – three high-side and three low-side drivers are controlled across a high-voltage input pin, a digital RUN pin and six digital I/O lines. The configuration options include either six direct control inputs or three enable and three PWM inputs. In the latter case, the delay time is generated automatically; it can be adjusted through an external resistor.

Integrated is a DC/DC buck converter to supply the drivers and other loads with a gate voltage of 11V / 100mA. Another integrated 3.3V DC/DC converter can supply an external microcontroller with a current of 20mA. For higher loads, the regulator can be connected to an external driver transistor.

The E523.50 features a range of diagnosis and protective options: Two error outputs indicate overcurrent, undervoltage and overtemperature. The device is integrated into a thermally efficient exposed-pad QFN package which makes it possible to run the chip near its maximum permitted temperature.
