Efficient high-voltage LED controller for harsh environments

Chipmaker Elmos AG has developed an LED controller product family which covers the entire input voltage range from 5 V to 55 V. They offer an output voltage of up to 60 V in boost mode and support ambient temperatures between -40 °C and +125 °C which makes them suited for operation in harsh environments including automotive and exterior lighting.

The products in the E522.3x family can be used as stand-alone controllers or in dual mode, depending on the specific type.

Besides offering high robustness, the devices support a great variety of circuit topologies, the company said. For instance, they can be integrated into buck-boost, boost, buck and SEPIC topologies.

The switching frequency can be adjusted by means of an external resistor to values of up to 600 kHz. In a master-slave configuration, the frequency can be aligned with other components. In sleep mode, the power consumption is as low as 8µA. Other features include short circuit and over-temperature protection as well as against interrupted load.

The E522.3x controllers are available in a QFN32L5 package.
