Google brings live traffic info to Google Maps

Internet giant Google has joined the crowd of service vendors for the apparently rather attractive market for live traffic information. Beginning mid-July, the company has started to offer this information in 13 European countries. The data are available in Google Maps, Google Maps for mobile phones (Android and iOS platforms).

The information is updated at least every 10 minutes. The data are acquired from a third-party service provider and to a lesser extent by crowdsourcing, the company said. With the move, Google starts to compete with existing traffic information systems including TMC, TMC Pro and similar services throughout Europe. "Our goal is to continuously generate the best maps available in the market", a company spokesperson said. "For this reason, we are looking to ways to augment Google Maps with additional new information." She added that the service is also available for the Beta release of Google Maps Navigation.

The service is available in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Israel, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.
