Leoni to provide cable looms for PSA

June 23, 2016 // By Christoph Hammerschmidt
Cable systems expert Leoni AG (Nuremberg, Germany) has secured two contracts from French carmaker PSA Group to provide wiring looms. Beginning in October 2018, Leoni will furnish a model of PSA’s DS brand as well as the new generations of the 208 and 2008 compact / mini SUV models with wiring systems.

The contracts with a total value of € 500 million include product design and development as well as just-in-time shipping across the entire life cycle of these vehicles through 2026. For the European market, Leoni plans to manufacture different types of cable looms in its factories in Northern Africa and Eastern Europe.

Since Leoni is a global supplier of PSA with presence in China, South America and Russia and the successor models to the current versions of the 208 and 2008 will be marketed in these regions for the first time, the supplier could achieve synergies in terms of development capabilities, production and costs.

Cable looms for cars typically are the second heaviest component after the engine and thus development efforts go towards lightweight designs. Currently, Leoni and PSA are investigating to which extend the wiring for medium and low power loads can be manufactured with aluminum instead of the usual copper.
