In the 2015 season, Magneti Marelli supplies its technology to a range of motor racing categories including Formula 1, MotoGP and various motorbike championships. The technologies provided include V2X telemetry systems, engine control units and data loggers.

For the Formula 1, the most prestigious and popular racing category in motorsports, Magneti Marelli has been selected by eight racing teams to provide the V2X telemetry system. It consists of a control unit installed in the vehicles. The device has the size of two smartphones and transmits about 300.000 measurement values every second to a chain of roadside access points along the racetrack. The vehicle’s internal monitoring system acquires about 1.000 parameters – and some of them are read every single millisecond. Thus, in every race about 20 Gigabyte of data is collected and transmitted through the V2X antenna positioned in the nose of the vehicle. The roadside infrastructure routes these data to a system of backend servers for further processing and real-time analysis.

Other subsystems provided by the Italian automotive electronics supplier to F1 racing cars include a DC/DC converter for the 12V / 48V split-voltage on-board power supply. For Formula 1 as well as for other projects the company also is studying new technological approaches related to video capture at higher frame rate and image processing.

Besides Formula 1, Magneti Marelli continues to be a sought-after provider in various categories of motorcycle racing. For instance, the company designs and builds the electronic engine control unit for all teams in the MotoGP championship, which observer call the premium class of motorbike racing. Magneti Marelli’s ECU offers a very high number crunching capacity, a basic requirement for sophisticated engine and vehicle control strategies. In accordance with the DORNA regulations (DORNA holds the rights for the MotoGP championship), Magneti Marelli also enables racing teams to fine-tune the trim and provides data analysis tools, dashboard functions and the inertial platform for the dynamics control electronics and for the motorbike trim control. In addition to providing a uniform ECU for all teams, Magneti Marelli is also the official supplier of key components for Yamaha and Ducati. The company supplies coils, injectors, speed
