For the Formula 1, the most prestigious and popular racing category in motorsports, Magneti Marelli has been selected by eight racing teams to provide the V2X telemetry system. It consists of a control unit installed in the vehicles. The device has the size of two smartphones and transmits about 300.000 measurement values every second to a chain of roadside access points along the racetrack. The vehicle’s internal monitoring system acquires about 1.000 parameters – and some of them are read every single millisecond. Thus, in every race about 20 Gigabyte of data is collected and transmitted through the V2X antenna positioned in the nose of the vehicle. The roadside infrastructure routes these data to a system of backend servers for further processing and real-time analysis.
Other subsystems provided by the Italian automotive electronics supplier to F1 racing cars include a DC/DC converter for the 12V / 48V split-voltage on-board power supply. For Formula 1 as well as for other projects the company also is studying new technological approaches related to video capture at higher frame rate and image processing.
