Rohm LEDs, drivers aim at background lighting and automotive markets

Rohm Semiconductor has introduced a product family of white high-power / high brightness chip LEDs with integrated reflector. The products of the SMLx family target display background lighting and automotive applications.

The comprehensive functionality of instrument clusters, audio and navigation systems, air conditioning and switches in cars today demands the usage of chips with high efficiency. Constant light generation, low power consumption and high stability are paramount aspects. With its new product roll-outs of LEDs and LED drivers, Rohm meets the specific demand of these application segments.

Within the new LED families SMLZ1xx, SMLKxx, SMLVxx and SMLAxx, designers have the choice of various top view and side view packages as well as of a great diversity with regard to power and light intensity. Also; the user can select between cold white and warm white colors. In addition, the new LEDs excel through efficient heat removal, Rohm says. This makes them ideal for operation at high temperatures since it maintains its power level also at high currents. What's more, through this feature the LEDs are very reliable and lasting.

With the new LED BD81A04 LED driver family Rohm can offer a complete design solution for display background lighting applications. The new IC features four channels designed to drive 120mA. Through its integrated buck/boost DC/DC constant current regulator, the chip can drive a broad spectrum of different LEDs and can be used to equip head-up displays (HuDs) with efficient background lighting. The BD81A04 significantly reduces the number of external components required. Thanks to its specific topology, the device gets along with just an inductor for the buck/boost configuration. Mosfets for the PWM current driver and the boost FET are already integrated.

Multiple channels can be combined to achieve higher output current. All protection mechanisms such as current, voltage and temperature monitoring circuitry are integrated.

The SMLx LED family is available in sample and production quantities. Samples of the BD81A04 are available; volume production is scheduled to ramp up in 2Q12.
