Software platform facilitates development of virtual instrument clusters

With their sophisticated 2D and 3D graphics, digital instrument clusters are one of the fastest growing segments of automotive electronics. With its new Platform for Instrument Clusters, software vendor QNX is addressing this promising segment.

Digital instrument clusters combine appealing looks with context sensitive representation of data provided by various vehicle subsystems such as navigation instructions, local speed limits, back-up camera image, and collision warnings. Strategy Analytics predicts that the demand for hybrid and full digital instrument clusters will rise from 8.7 million units in 2015 to 42.2 million units in 2023.


QNX’ Platform for Instrument Clusters is a comprehensive solution for developers of such digital instrument clusters. It contains

  • QNX OS for Safety, an ISO26262-certified operating system with a toolchain that supports all safety integrity levels including the highest one, ASIL D, which is mandatory for instrument clusters and other critical vehicle systems.
  • A 2D/3D graphics framework that shields safety-critical functions in the instrument cluster from other software components, effectively increasing ruggedness and reliability and simplifying the certification process for the entire system.
  • A reference implementation that includes the source code, helping developers to become quickly productive in creating full digital instrument clusters.

QNX is in a tight collaboration with functional safety certification agency TÜV Rheinland to have the graphics framework according to ISO 26262.


To further speed the development, the QNX Platform for Instrument Clusters will also support application development tools that are part of the QNX ecosystem such as the Crank Software Storyboard Suite, DiSTI Coproration GL Studio, Elektrobit EB Guide and Rightware Kanzi UI. Thanks to this wide selection of tools, customers can pick the UI technology and design concepts that best suit their specific project requirements.
