Virtual test tool supports latest Euro NCAP requirements

Driver assistance systems increasingly support driver's decisions in complex traffic situations. Before they can be tested under real word conditions, they undergo extensive testing in virtual traffic environments. Tool vendor dSpace therefore has introduced a new version of its Automotive Simulation Models (ASM), which allows OEMs to test their vehicles against the latest Euro NCAP requirements.

The model simulates a test vehicle driving on urban or rural roads along with a multitude of other traffic participants - vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs and other objects. Virtual sensors recognise the environment and deliver signals to the driver assistance system. Users - test engineers - can create reproducible simulation of, for instance, collision prone traffic scenarios to check how good the driver assistance systems work.

In connection with the AutomationDesk test automation software, the current version ASM Traffic 3.0 offers a range of ready-to-use tests for active safety functions that have been developed in accordance with the Euro NCAP protocol. The basic idea of these tests is determining the reaction time and speed reduction of a test vehicle necessary to avoid or mitigate a collision. The Euro NCAP Test Suite provides data that enable OEMs to evaluate the likely outcome of the Euro NCAP test and its assessment result, in particular for vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

ASM Traffic contains a real-time enabled simulation model and a graphical user interface. The latter offers a set of tools to define components relevant for the tests such as a road network, road signs, vehicles and sensors or extract these components of existing data.
