XSmall package for automotive EEPROMs

A straightforward, simple design and at the same time a maximum of flexibility for future upgrades are reasons why automotive electronics developers prefer discrete serial EEPROMs for data and parameter storage. STMicroelectronics now extends the spectrum of EEPROM densities available in an extra-small WFDFPN8 package.

In highly integrated body controllers and gateways as well as in radar and camera modules for driver assistant systems, discrete serial EEPROMs store the necessary non-volatile data sets. In space-constrained applications however, designers could not benefit at full extend from the properties of these storage devices, since the number of package options and storage densities was limited. Now STMicroelectronics offers its new automotive-qualified WFDFPN8 package for all storage densities from 2 KB to 512 KB. With a size of just 2 x 3 mm, this package helps to reduce valuable footprint on in-car PCBs. Despite their small size, these EEPROMs are available with I2C as well as SPI interface.

In consumer electronics applications, the WFDFPN8 package already has gained high popularity. ST now has developed a particularly robust version of this package that can cope with environment conditions encountered in automotive applications. Their reliability check according to AEC-Q100 Grade 0 certifies that they can operate at temperatures up to 120°C. Other features are a write cycle time of 4 ms that enables quick data storage. Built-in traceability and safety features, including a specific storage page dedicated to software identification as well as a page with write protection that can be switched on and off increase their reliability and dependability.
